I don’t always jump on fashion trends, but after spotting ankle socks with penny loafers on everyone, I bought my first two pairs: one from Sebago and one from G.H. Bass. But which one is the best?
Sebago Classic Dan
My first ever pair of penny loafers! I chose a classic dark burgundy colour.
Fit /size
The fit is weird. Like all of us, my feet are not exactly the same: my left foot is a tiny bit shorter! Sometimes with narrow close-toe shoes, it can be hard to decide if I need a 36.5EU or a 37EU (my regular size). I went for a 37EU, which is perfect for my right foot but too big for my left one.
But it’s a crazy difference that I’ve never had with any other ballerinas or loafers. I even checked the labels to see if they put a wrong bigger number in the shoe box but apparently I got two 37EU. This is the main issue I’ve got with the Sebago Classic Dan loafers and the reason why I won’t buy a pair ever again.
I couldn’t solve the issues with some insoles, so this has been putting me off.
Comfort
After my beloved Gucci Jordaan Loafers, nothing else can compete in terms of comfort and softness of the leather. The Classic Dan loafers have got sturdy yet quite flexible leather. In fact, I haven’t experienced blisters or calluses.
I’d say 6/10.
Price
They cost 210€ on the official website (one year ago was 189€!).
G.H. Bass Weejuns
To me, Penny Loafers are the new sneakers! They go with so many outfits and give you that classy vibe so effortlessly. So I went for another classic: the G.H. Bass Weejuns.
Fit / Size
After months of struggling with the Sebago’s, I put the Weejuns on and I was like “THIS IS A DREAM”. They fit perfectly from the start and I didn’t have to break them in.
I was worried that the leather would get too soft, making them suddenly too big! It didn’t happen: my G.H. Bass Weejuns still fit great.
Comfort
I’d say 8/10.
Price
They cost 180€ on the official website.
How to style penny loafers if you’re not tall
At first, I was hesitant because I love the look of bare ankles and I was worried that the socks could make me seem shorter than I am (1,63cm)! To address the problem I only wear ankle socks & penny loafers with:
- mini dresses
- mini skirts
- tailored trousers
and they look super pretty in my opinion!
I buy most of my socks (and tights) from Calzedonia, which offers recurring discounts and promotions. Keep your eyes peeled!
